Harvard Lawyer Reps C-Murder For Free In Retrial Attempt (NEWS)

Rapper Corey “C-Murder” Miller cannot afford to hire lawyers to fund his appeal, but two lawyers have come to his aid in an attempt to secure a retrial.

Attorney Robert Smith, of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute of Race and Justice at Harvard Law School and John Adcock of New Orleans are representing Miller free of charge.

The rapper, 38, was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Steve Thomas, 16, inside of a now-defunct Jefferson Parish nightclub in January of 2002 and sentenced to a mandatory life sentence.

According to the Times-Picayune, Miller cannot afford to pay the $20,702 for case records and trial transcripts and fees, which alone total $17,335.

Since Miller has no known income, real estate or savings, his lawyers have filed a motion to declare him indigent, which would allow him access to the court records at no cost. A hearing is set for December 10. Miller is also facing a civil lawsuit in relation to Thomas’ death.

C-Murder is the brother of rap mogul Master P., one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs the Hip-Hop genre has produced. In interview last month, Master P. addressed C-Murder’s incarceration.

“He know he didn’t commit this crime but for him keeping it real in the streets and not saying who did it, where he at? He in the penitentiary,” Master P. told AllHipHop.com. “So sometimes your pride could kill you. My whole thing is: don’t let pride get in the way of what you want to do. Hip-hop artists got this ‘keep it real’ thing like they on the streets now.”

Master P. also blamed C-Murder’s rap name for some of the legal problems he encountered, despite his younger brother’s attempt to rename himself “C-Miller” to downplay the controversial moniker.

“Right now, C-Murder is a victim of a crime himself. He’s innocent on this case but because of his name, image and past, that’s given them the right to take him away off the streets,” Master P. said.

Miami based label Slip-N-Slide Records has extended their partnership with EMI Label Sevices based on the success of Trina’s last album Still Da Baddest. Under the new deal, EMI will market, promote, merchandise and license new albums and tracks from Trina, Deuce Poppi and Jagged Edge. “I’m excited to continue working with EMI Label Services,” Slip-N-Slide CEO Ted Lucas told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “They’ve played a role in the enormous growth of Slip-N-Slide Records. I look forward to another ground-breaking year of great albums by Jagged Edge, Trina and Deuce Poppi who are phenomenal Slip-N-Slide Records recording artists.” Trina is preparing to release her 5th album, which is titled Amazin, which will land in stores March 30, 2010.

Despite being convicted for murder and sentenced to life in prison last month, New Orleans rapper C-Murder is planning to release a new album. C-Murder’s Calliope Click album is being released by RBC Records and will hit stores on September 29. Sources close to Miller stated that the rapper will be appealing the conviction. “It’s amazing that this sort of thing is still happening in 2009. Corey had been hard at work attempting to rebuild his life and career,” said Brett Morrow of RBC Records. “RBC believes in Corey and for the local Parish judicial system to attempt to sideline the rebuilding of his life by convicting him unfairly solely based on his race is an outrage.”

C-Murder Sentenced To Life Without Parole

Rap star Corey “C-Murder” Miller was officially sentenced to life in prison today (August 14) for killing a 16-year-old teenager inside a Jefferson Parish nightclub.

On Tuesday (August 11) a jury found Miller guilty of shooting and killing Steven Thomas inside of the club, after an altercation with Miller and several other men in January of 2002.

Miller’s attorney Ron Rakosky asked Judge Jans Liljeberg for a retrial, but the judge refused the request yet again, paving the way for Miller, 38, to be sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole.

The rapper was originally found guilty of the shooting in 2002, but the verdict was overturned when it was learned that prosecutors hid the criminal records of several witnesses from the defense.

Miller appeared in court today chained and shackled.

He sat quietly as Rakosky filed a motion to withdraw as Miller’s attorney, because Miller had not paid him for his services. Miller plans to appeal the guilty verdict.

C. Murder helped usher New Orleans Hip-Hop into the mainstream with brothers Percy “Master P.” Miller and Vyshonn “Silkk the Shocker” Miller as part of No Limit Records.

He is also the uncle of teen actor/rapper Romeo Miller, star of the series Romeo! on Nickelodeon.
